Per the Division of Real Estate there are recent instances of someone pretending to be a buyer and baiting real estate brokers into meeting, under the pretext of wanting to look at homes for sale. In one reported instance, the individual profiled and texted/emailed female brokers stating that he is a qualified buyer and provided a fake loan pre-qualification letter in order to get the broker to send him information and to set up a private meeting or home showing.
Following are steps you can take to protect your safety when meeting a potential client.
1. Make a copy of their government-issued ID.
2. Have the potential client complete an information form including name, address, phone #’s, government ID, vehicle info, etc.
3. Meet any potential client first in the office or safe public location before agreeing to a private showing.
4. Go to a private home showing with a co-worker present. If you do go alone to a showing, make sure that at least a personal contact and your office knows your whereabouts.
5. Do not drive with a potential client to a showing. They should drive themselves and meet you there.
6. If you are contacted by someone in an offensive or obscene manner, contact local or county law enforcement to report the incident.
7. Remember to trust your instincts! If you are suspicious of the person, go with your instinct and pass on any meeting.
These are only a few tips to help you be safe when meeting a potential client for the first time. The Division recommends that you also consider a real estate broker safety class. Remember, it's important to not let your guard down at any time, even when it appears that a potential sale is coming your way!

NAR's Ethics Course Requirements
NAR requires all members take 2 hours and 30 minutes of Ethics every two years.
The current cycle requires members to take Ethics between January 1, 2019 and December 31, 2020, or be suspended until the requirement is met. Members still suspended on March 1, 2021 will be terminated from membership.
MAR will soon announce three 2019 dates for Ethics courses free to MAR members.
Ethics classes taken before January 1, 2019 do not count for this cycle.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS
MAR's BOD meets on the 3rd Wednesday of the month, unless a conflict requires a change. The next meeting is February 20, 2019 at 9:00 am.
